Our office soon to switch to Office 2007

At work, Scot told me to install Microsoft Office 2007, watch the demo, get used to it, and be ready to answer staff questions. Boy!

If you’ve got any pointers for me, leave a comment! (I use OpenOffice at home, so I’ll have to deal with Microsoft Office three times a week.)

  1. You’re pretty much assured to get a TON of questions about the UI. While I really like the new UI and have been using it for quite a while now (beta testing), it was a hell of a learning curve. I still remember drawing a chart and trying to change the axes labels. It seriously took me 10 minutes to find out how.

You’ll probably assume the basic stuff is all going to be straightforward, but it really isn’t in some cases. Use it and do the stuff a normal user in your office will use it for. You’ll be surprised how many things aren’t where you left them (in Office 2003 😉 )

That said, now that I do know where most of the functions are, it’s really slick. Some stuff like fading in a small formatting toolbox when you have text highlighted definitely helps productivity.

  2. I’m not sure I’m looking forward to the myriad of questions I’m going to get. I’ve only been on Office 2007 since Friday. We’ve previously been using Office 2000, skipping 2002 and 2003. I’m liking it so far, but I don’t need to get it for home — I’ll stick to OpenOffice.

I’m hoping they’ll use keyboard shortcuts more than they probably do right now.

Talk to me, Goose
